How to Add a Gift Wrap Option to a Shopify Cart
How to add gift wrap to a Shopify cart as an opt-in add-on: pricing it, taking a gift message, handling it in fulfilment and hiding prices on the slip.
To add a gift wrap option to a Shopify cart, offer it as an opt-in add-on: an unticked checkbox with the price beside it that puts a gift-wrap line on the order, plus a field for the gift message. The cart side is the easy part. What decides whether it works is the warehouse: someone has to see the request, wrap the order, include the message and leave the prices out of the parcel. This guide covers set-up, pricing, the message, fulfilment, packing slips and when to switch it on.
How does gift wrap work on Shopify?
As a line on the order. The usual approach is a gift-wrap product, set up like any other, that is added to the cart when the shopper ticks the box. Because it is a line item, it carries a price, appears on the order in the admin and reaches whoever packs the parcel.
There are three ways to get the checkbox into the cart: a theme that includes one, custom code, or an app that provides add-ons. Whichever you use, three things must hold:
- The box is unticked by default.
- The price is visible before the shopper ticks it.
- Unticking removes the line and the charge.
A paid extra should never be pre-selected. The rules on that in the US, UK and EU are summarised in our cart drawer guide; check the ones for your market. Marka Cart Drawer offers gift wrap as an opt-in add-on on paid plans, never pre-checked and with the price shown first.
How much should you charge?
Enough to cover materials and the packer's time, with a little over. Work it out instead of guessing.
Here is an example with made-up figures. Say paper, ribbon and a card cost $1.20 per order, and wrapping takes three minutes of a packer paid $20 an hour, which is $1.00. The cost is $2.20. A price of $4 or $5 covers it and allows for the orders that take longer.
Then decide the unit:
- Per order is simplest to explain and to charge. Say whether several items are wrapped together or separately.
- Per item suits stores where each product is a gift in itself, but the cart has to make clear which items are being wrapped.
Some stores wrap for free as a point of difference. That is a fair choice if the cost is in your margin, and it should still be opt-in, so that the warehouse wraps only the orders that asked for it.
How do you take the gift message?
Through the order note, which every Shopify order already carries. A note field in the cart, labelled for the purpose, sends the text through to the order where the packer can read it.
- Label it 'Gift message', not 'Order note', when gift wrap is ticked.
- Say how much room there is. If your card holds three lines, tell the shopper before they write ten.
- Decide who writes it out: printed on a card or handwritten. Handwriting adds time and should be in the price.
The detail of using notes this way, including keeping gift messages apart from delivery instructions, is in order notes and gift messages in the Shopify cart.
How should fulfilment handle gift-wrapped orders?
By making them impossible to miss. A wrap request that depends on a packer noticing one line among many will be missed on a busy day.
- Flag the order. Tag orders that contain the gift-wrap line, by hand or with an automation such as Shopify Flow, so they can be filtered and batched.
- Give them a station. Wrap at one bench with the materials to hand, not in the main packing line.
- Check the message. The person who wraps confirms the card matches the note on the order.
- Set a cut-off. If wrapped orders take longer, say so in the cart: for example, that they ship a day later.
If a third-party warehouse ships for you, confirm they offer wrapping, what they charge and how they receive the instruction before you put the option in front of customers.
How do you keep prices out of the parcel?
Check what gets printed and put in the box. A gift that arrives with the price on a slip of paper has gone wrong at the last step.
- Look at your packing slip template. Shopify's can be edited, and many shipping tools print their own. Make sure prices are not on it.
- Consider leaving the gift-wrap line off the slip as well; the recipient does not need to see that wrapping was paid for.
- Do not put an invoice in the parcel. The buyer has the order confirmation by email.
- Remove price tags and stickers from the product before wrapping.
Print a slip for a test order and look at it before the first real one ships.
When should gift wrap be switched on?
When you can deliver it well. For most stores that means either all year in small volumes, or a planned window around gifting seasons.
A seasonal switch has advantages. The option appears when shoppers want it, the warehouse is staffed for it, and it goes away before it becomes a chore done badly. If you run it this way:
- Switch it on before the season starts, and place a test order first.
- Publish the last order date for wrapped delivery.
- Switch it off when the packing team can no longer keep up, and say why.
Peak-season preparation as a whole is in our Black Friday cart checklist.
A short checklist
- Create the gift-wrap product and price it from materials and time.
- Add it to the cart as an unticked option with the price shown.
- Show a labelled gift message field when the box is ticked.
- Tag wrapped orders so the warehouse can filter them.
- Remove prices from the packing slip and keep invoices out of the box.
- Place a test order and follow it through to the packed parcel.
Gift wrap is a small feature that customers remember when it is done properly and remember longer when it is not. To offer it as an opt-in add-on in a slide-out cart with an order note, see Marka Cart Drawer.
