Volume Discounts for Wholesale and B2B Buyers on Shopify
How to set volume discounts for trade buyers on Shopify: case-pack tiers, order minimums, per-unit pricing and keeping wholesale apart from retail.
For wholesale and B2B buyers, set volume discounts at case-pack quantities, state a minimum order, show the price per unit at every tier, and keep trade prices where retail shoppers cannot reach them. Trade buyers reorder, compare suppliers by unit cost and resell at a margin of their own, so the ladder has to be built for that. This guide covers tier design, minimums, the general ways to separate wholesale from retail on Shopify, and how to avoid undercutting your own stockists.
How are trade quantity breaks different from retail ones?
A retail break persuades someone to buy three when they wanted one. A trade break rewards an order size that lowers your cost to serve, for a buyer who was always going to buy in bulk.
That changes the design:
- The buyer thinks in units and margin. They want the unit cost at each tier so they can work out their own resale margin.
- Quantities follow packaging. Trade orders come in cases, layers and pallets, not in ones and twos.
- The relationship repeats. A tier structure is a price list the buyer will plan around for months. Change it rarely, and with notice.
Where should case-pack tiers sit?
At whole cases, with breaks at the quantities where your own costs step down: a full case, a number of cases that fills a shipping carton or pallet layer, and a full pallet if you sell at that scale.
Say a brand sells a candle that retails at $12 and wholesales at $6, packed in cases of 12. As example figures, each candle costs $3 to produce.
- 1 to 4 cases: $6.00 per unit, $72 per case. Margin $3.00 per unit.
- 5 to 9 cases: $5.70 per unit, $68.40 per case. Margin $2.70 per unit.
- 10 cases or more: $5.40 per unit, $64.80 per case. Margin $2.40 per unit.
A four-case order earns $144 on 48 units. A ten-case order earns $288 on 120 units, from one pick, one shipment and one invoice. The unit margin fell and the order became twice as valuable, which is the trade you are making. Run the same sum with freight included, since on heavy goods delivery can absorb the whole discount.
What minimums should you set?
Set the minimum at the smallest order that is worth processing, and express it the way the buyer orders.
- Minimum order value suits buyers who spread an order across many products.
- Minimum quantity per product suits lines sold by the case.
- Order increments keep quantities to whole cases.
A minimum is also a filter. It separates businesses buying to resell from individuals looking for a cheaper way to buy for themselves. State it plainly on the price list and on the trade application page, so nobody learns of it at checkout.
How do you keep wholesale and retail pricing separate?
By making trade prices depend on who the buyer is, not only on how much they order. In general terms there are four ways to do it on Shopify:
- Shopify's built-in B2B features, available on some plans, which let you attach buyers to company accounts and give those accounts their own price lists and terms. Check what your plan includes.
- A separate wholesale storefront, closed to the public, with its own prices.
- Logged-in pricing on the main store, where approved customers are tagged and a wholesale app shows them trade prices.
- Manual orders. For a small number of accounts, draft orders and invoices priced from an agreed list are often enough.
Whichever you choose, trade pricing should require approval and a login. How tax is displayed and charged to business customers depends on the market and the buyer's status. This guide is not tax advice; confirm the treatment with your accountant before publishing trade prices.
How should price per unit be shown?
On every tier, next to the case price and the quantity range. A trade buyer should be able to read the whole ladder in one view and see three things per tier: units, unit price and case price.
- State the case size wherever a case price appears.
- Show the saving against the base trade price, not against retail.
- Keep the recommended retail price visible if you publish one, so the buyer can see their margin.
How do you avoid channel conflict?
Keep the best price a retail shopper can reach clearly above the price your stockists pay. Stockists read your website. If a consumer can get close to wholesale cost with a public quantity break and a welcome code, your retailers are being undercut by their own supplier.
- Cap public quantity breaks. Retail tiers should stop at household quantities and at a discount well short of trade.
- Check stacking. Work out the lowest price a shopper could reach with every public discount combined. Our guide to how discount stacking and combinations work on Shopify shows how to control it.
- Keep trade prices off discount codes. A wholesale price is already net.
Where do storefront quantity breaks fit?
On the retail side, and for small bulk buyers who will never apply for a trade account: the office ordering for a team, the salon buying a dozen, the customer stocking up. A public ladder serves them without any paperwork.
Marka Bundles & Upsells offers quantity breaks on the storefront, targeted at products or collections and applied automatically at checkout. That is a tool for those public tiers; account-based wholesale pricing is a separate job, handled by one of the four routes above. For the retail ladder itself, see how to set quantity break tiers, and for packs sold as their own variants, multipacks versus quantity breaks.
A short checklist
- Set tiers at whole cases and at the points where your costs step down.
- Calculate margin per order at each tier, including freight.
- Publish a minimum order and case increments.
- Put trade prices behind approval and a login.
- Show units, unit price and case price for every tier.
- Work out the lowest price a retail shopper can reach, and keep it above trade.
- Confirm tax treatment with your accountant.
Trade pricing rewards being predictable more than being clever. For the consumer-facing offers that sit beside it, our guide to Shopify bundle types is the place to begin, and Marka Bundles & Upsells handles the public quantity breaks.
