Automatic Discounts vs Discount Codes on Shopify: When to Use Each

When to use an automatic discount and when a discount code fits better on Shopify: friction, coupon-site leakage, attribution and checkout consistency.

Use an automatic discount when every shopper who meets the condition should get the price: bundles, quantity breaks, buy one get one, a public sale. Use a discount code when the offer is meant for some people and not others, or when you need to know which partner or campaign sent the order. This guide covers how the two behave at checkout, where each one costs you money, and how to run both without them stacking by accident.

What is the difference between an automatic discount and a discount code?

An automatic discount is a rule Shopify checks against every cart. If the cart qualifies, the price drops and the shopper does nothing. A discount code is the same kind of rule locked behind a word the shopper has to enter, or a link that enters it for them.

That single difference drives everything else:

  • Who gets it. Automatic: everyone who qualifies. Code: only people who hold the code.
  • Effort. Automatic: none. Code: find it, type it, hope it is still valid.
  • What you learn. Automatic: that the offer was used. Code: which code was used, and so which email, creator or campaign earned the order.
  • When the price appears. An automatic price can be reflected in the cart before checkout. A code changes nothing until it is entered.

When should you use an automatic discount?

When the offer is part of how the product is sold. A bundle price is a price, not a promotion. If the product page says three for $48, the cart and the checkout have to say three for $48 without the shopper lifting a finger.

Good fits:

  • quantity breaks and multi-buy pricing;
  • fixed bundles and mix and match sets;
  • buy one get one and gift with purchase;
  • sales that are public anyway, such as an end-of-season event.

Marka Bundles & Upsells works this way: its bundle, quantity-break and BOGO discounts are applied at checkout by Shopify Functions, so there is no code for a shopper to find, type or forget.

The cost of an automatic discount is that it is indiscriminate. Everyone who qualifies receives it, including the customer who would have paid full price. Set it at a level you can afford to give to all of them. Our guide to how much discount a bundle should carry works through that sum.

When should you use a discount code?

When the offer is private, or when you need to attribute it.

  • Attribution. Give each creator, affiliate or podcast its own code, and Shopify's sales reports show which one brought the order.
  • Private offers. A win-back email, an apology from support, a staff allowance, a thank-you for a loyal customer. These should not be visible to everyone.
  • Controlled quantity. Codes can be limited to a number of uses, to one use per customer, or to chosen customers. That makes them the right tool for an offer with a budget.

How much friction does a code add?

More than the typing. A code box on the cart or checkout tells every shopper that a lower price may exist. Some leave to look for it. Of those, some return with a code you never meant them to have, and some do not return at all.

If you send a code to people you want to use it, send it as a link that applies the code for them. They should never need to copy and paste.

How do codes leak to coupon sites?

Codes are text, and text gets shared. A code written for one creator's audience ends up on coupon sites and in browser extensions, which offer it to shoppers who were already at checkout and about to pay in full.

Leakage costs you twice. You give margin away on orders you would have won anyway, and your attribution is polluted, because the creator is credited with sales they did not send.

To contain it:

  • set an end date and a usage limit on every code;
  • use unique, single-use codes for email offers where your email tool can generate them;
  • restrict sensitive codes to specific customers;
  • review code usage monthly and retire any code whose use has outgrown its source.

Automatic discounts cannot leak, because nothing about them is secret.

Which one keeps the price consistent to checkout?

Automatic discounts. Shopify evaluates them on the cart itself, so the product page, the cart and the checkout can all show the same figure. A bundle that depends on a code promises a price on the page that only arrives if the shopper remembers to enter it. When the checkout total is higher than the page said, the shopper has no way of knowing why, and little reason to find out.

Can an automatic discount and a code be used together?

Only if you allow it. Shopify lets you set, for each discount, whether it combines with other product discounts, order discounts and shipping discounts. Decide this on purpose.

Say a three-pack lists at $60 and your bundle takes 20 percent off, so the shopper pays $48. The three units cost you $24, leaving $24 profit. Now a 15 percent welcome code is allowed on top: the shopper pays $40.80 and your profit falls to $16.80. That may be acceptable for a first order. It should not be a surprise.

The rules are covered in detail in our piece on how discount stacking and combinations work on Shopify, and the wider choice of offer type in the guide to Shopify bundle types.

A short checklist

  1. Make every bundle, quantity break and BOGO an automatic discount.
  2. Keep codes for attribution and for offers that are private.
  3. Give each partner its own code, with an end date and a usage limit.
  4. Send codes as links that apply themselves.
  5. Set combination rules for each discount, and work out the stacked price before allowing it.
  6. Test the full path on a phone and compare page, cart and checkout.

Most stores end up with both: automatic discounts for the offers on the product page, and a small, well-kept set of codes for partners and private offers. For the first half of that, Marka Bundles & Upsells applies each offer at checkout without a code.
