Video Reviews on Shopify: Are They Worth Collecting?

When video reviews are worth collecting on Shopify, which products benefit, how to ask, how long clips should be, and how to keep product pages fast.

Video reviews are worth collecting on Shopify when your product has to be seen moving, working or being handled to be understood, and they are a poor use of effort when a photo already tells the whole story. Far fewer customers will record a clip than will write two sentences, so the case rests on each video being much more informative than the review it replaces. This guide covers which products benefit, how to ask, how long a clip should be, how to moderate video, and how to stop it slowing your product pages.

Which products benefit from video reviews?

Products where the buying question is about behaviour and not appearance. A still image can show what something looks like. It cannot show what it does.

Video earns its place for:

  • Demonstration. Gadgets, tools, kitchen equipment, toys and anything with a mechanism. A customer folding a pushchair in one movement answers a question that no paragraph can.
  • Texture and movement. How a fabric drapes when someone walks, how a cream spreads, how a finish catches the light as the item turns.
  • Size in use. A person picking up a bag, sitting on a chair or holding a device shows scale better than a still, because the viewer sees it from several angles.
  • Sound. Speakers, instruments, keyboards, and appliances whose noise level matters to the buyer.

Video adds little for products judged on a static look, such as prints, stationery or simple homeware, and for low-priced consumables where nobody will take the trouble to film. For those, concentrate on getting more photo reviews.

Are they worth the effort?

For the right products, yes, provided you accept that the numbers will be small. Recording a video asks a lot of a customer: they have to film, check the clip and upload a large file. Many will not, and that is fine.

Think of video as a small number of high-value reviews on your most important products, not as a replacement for written ones. Three good clips on a bestseller can do more for an undecided shopper than another thirty text reviews saying 'great product'.

How should you ask for a video?

Offer video as an option in the review form, next to photo upload, and never as a requirement. The written review and rating should stand on their own, with video available to the customers who want to add it.

Three things improve the response:

  1. Give a prompt. 'Show us how you use it' is easier to act on than 'upload a video'. Tailor it to the product: 'show the fold', 'show it on', 'let us hear it'.
  2. Ask at the right time. A customer needs to be comfortable with a product before filming it. Video requests suit a longer delay after delivery than a simple rating does, as set out in when to send a review request email.
  3. Ask your keenest customers directly. Someone who has already written a detailed, positive or critical review is more likely to agree to film a clip than a stranger receiving a first email.

If you offer anything in return, it must be offered whatever the customer says about the product, and be disclosed beside the review. The rules are outlined in our guide to verified product reviews on Shopify.

How long should a video review be?

Short. Ask for a clip of under a minute that makes one point. A shopper on a product page is deciding, not settling in to watch, and a brief clip that shows the product doing its job is enough.

Tell customers this when you ask. 'Fifteen to thirty seconds is plenty' lowers the barrier, because people imagine they are being asked for a polished presentation. They are not. Phone footage in ordinary light is what the next buyer wants to see.

How do you moderate video reviews?

Watch every clip to the end before approving it, with the sound on. Video cannot be skimmed the way text can, and a problem at second forty is still on your product page.

Apply the same standard as for written reviews: remove spam, abuse and reviews of the wrong product, and keep honest criticism. Beyond that, check for:

  • People who did not agree to appear, especially children.
  • Personal information in shot or spoken aloud, such as an address on a parcel label.
  • Claims about the product you could not make yourself, particularly health claims.

Tell customers at upload that their video may be displayed on your store, and ask separately before using it in advertising. Rights and privacy rules differ by market, so check those that apply to you. General moderation principles are in which reviews you should approve or reject.

In Marka Reviews, customers can attach video on the paid plans, photos are available on every plan, and each review can wait for your approval before it appears.

How do you keep video from slowing the product page?

Make sure no video file loads until the shopper asks for it. Video is the heaviest content a product page can carry, and reviews sit well below the first screen, so there is no reason for it to load with the page.

In practice:

  • Lazy load. The reviews section should fetch its media only as the shopper scrolls near it.
  • Show a still first. Display a thumbnail with a play button, and load the video on tap.
  • No autoplay. Autoplaying clips download data the shopper did not ask for and fight with the product gallery for attention.

After adding video, test a product page on a phone over mobile data and compare it with the page before. If the page was already slow, video will make that more visible. Our Shopify speed optimisation service deals with the underlying causes.

A short checklist

  1. Pick the products where movement, sound or handling answers the buying question.
  2. Offer video as optional in the review form, with a specific prompt.
  3. Ask for under a minute and say so.
  4. Watch every clip in full before approving.
  5. Load video only on tap, behind a still image.
  6. Test page speed on a phone after you switch it on.

Video reviews repay the effort on a narrow set of products and are a distraction on the rest. If yours are in the first group, Marka Reviews supports video reviews on its paid plans alongside photo and written reviews.
