Shopify Product Reviews: How to Collect Verified Reviews Shoppers and Google Trust

How to collect product reviews on Shopify: when to ask, what verified should mean, photo reviews, Google stars, and the review rules in the US, UK and EU.

A product review does two jobs on a Shopify store: it answers the question the product page could not, and it tells the shopper that someone like them already took the risk. Both jobs depend on the review being real. This guide covers how to collect reviews on Shopify, what "verified" should mean, how stars reach Google, and what the law now says in the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Do you need a reviews app on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify retired its own free Product Reviews app in 2024, so every store now collects and displays reviews through a third-party app. The app does four things: it emails customers to ask for a review, stores and moderates what comes back, shows reviews on the product page, and marks up the page so search engines can read the rating.

When should you ask for a review?

Ask after the product has arrived and been used, not after the order was placed. The request should be triggered by fulfilment, with a delay that covers delivery plus a few days of use:

  • Fast-delivery consumables and apparel: 7 to 10 days after fulfilment.
  • Considered purchases such as furniture, skincare routines or electronics: 14 to 30 days, because the honest answer takes longer.
  • One reminder, about a week later, to people who have not answered. More than one reads as nagging.

A request sent too early gets reviews of your delivery speed. A request sent on time gets reviews of the product, which is what the next shopper needs.

What should "verified" mean?

A verified review is one the store can tie to a real order for that product. Nothing else should carry the badge. Reviews imported from another app, a marketplace or a spreadsheet may be perfectly genuine, but the app showing them did not see the order, so it cannot vouch for them.

This matters more than it used to. Shoppers have learned to discount a wall of unverified five-star reviews, and regulators now ask the same question they do. If your badge appears on every review, it tells nobody anything.

Marka Reviews is built on that rule: a review is marked verified only when it came through a request tied to a fulfilled order, and imported reviews are shown without the badge.

Should you moderate reviews?

Approve reviews before they appear, and publish the negative ones. Moderation is for removing spam, abuse and reviews of the wrong product. It is not for removing three-star reviews. A product with only perfect scores converts worse than one with a credible spread, and suppressing negative reviews is now unlawful in several markets (see below). Reply to critical reviews in public; the reply is read by more buyers than the review.

Are photo and video reviews worth it?

Yes, particularly for anything worn, applied or assembled. A customer photo shows size, colour and finish in ordinary light, which studio photography is designed not to do. Ask for a photo in the review form itself rather than in a second email, and show media reviews first on the product page.

How do review stars get into Google?

Two separate routes, and most stores only set up one.

  • Organic results. Stars under a normal search result come from review markup on the product page (the Product schema with aggregateRating). The rating must describe that specific product and must be visible on the page. A reviews app adds this markup for you.
  • Google Shopping. Stars on Shopping listings come from a product ratings feed submitted to Google Merchant Center. Google requires at least 50 reviews across your products before it shows ratings there.

Neither route is guaranteed: Google decides when to show stars. Clean markup and real volume are what you control.

What the law requires in the US, UK and EU

Review rules tightened in all three markets between 2022 and 2025.

  • United States. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024. It bans fake reviews, bans paying for reviews that must be positive, requires disclosure when insiders review their own products, and bans suppressing negative reviews. Incentives are allowed only if they are offered whatever the customer says, and are disclosed.
  • United Kingdom. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act made fake reviews and undisclosed incentivised reviews a banned practice from April 2025, and expects businesses to take reasonable steps to prevent them.
  • European Union. Since May 2022 the Omnibus Directive requires a store that shows reviews to state whether and how it checks that they come from real buyers.

The practical version is the same everywhere: say how you verify, never condition a reward on a positive rating, disclose incentives next to the review, and do not hide the bad ones.

A short checklist

  1. Send the request after delivery, with one reminder.
  2. Reserve the verified badge for reviews matched to an order.
  3. Publish negative reviews and reply to them.
  4. Ask for a photo in the review form.
  5. Check that product pages carry review markup, and submit a ratings feed once you pass 50 reviews.
  6. State on the site how reviews are verified.

If you want this set up without touching theme code, Marka Reviews does each step, and its free plan includes unlimited reviews. If the reviews are one part of a slower product page, our Shopify speed optimisation work covers the rest.
