Shopify Cart Drawer Not Opening or Updating: How to Fix It

A step-by-step way to fix a Shopify cart drawer that will not open or update: theme cart setting, app embeds, app conflicts, leftover code, forms and caching.

When a Shopify cart drawer will not open or does not update, the cause is usually one of six things: the theme's cart type setting, an app embed that is switched off, two cart apps competing, code left behind by an uninstalled app, an add-to-cart form the drawer does not recognise, or stale cart data. Work through them in that order, on a duplicate of your theme so that shoppers are not affected. This guide takes each check in turn.

How do you test safely before changing anything?

Duplicate your live theme and do all your testing on the copy. In the Themes area of your admin, duplicate the published theme, then use the preview to browse the copy as a shopper would. Nothing you change there reaches customers until you publish it.

Three things to know about testing this way:

  • App embeds are set per theme. A duplicate copies the settings as they stood, and you can switch embeds on and off in the copy without touching the live store.
  • Use a private browser window. It starts with an empty cart and no cached files.
  • Change one thing, then test. If you flip three settings and the drawer starts working, you will not know which one mattered.

Before you begin, write down exactly what happens. 'The product is added but the drawer does not open' and 'the drawer opens but shows the old contents' are different faults with different causes.

Is the theme's cart type set correctly?

Check this first, because it takes seconds. Most themes let you choose what happens when a product is added: open a drawer, go to the cart page, or show a small notification. The setting sits in the theme editor's theme settings, usually under a heading for the cart.

What it should be depends on whose drawer you want:

  • The theme's own drawer: set the cart type to drawer.
  • A cart drawer app: follow the app's instructions. Some apps need the theme set to a particular type so that the theme's drawer and the app's do not both respond.

Is the app embed switched on?

If your drawer comes from an app, confirm its embed is enabled in the theme you are actually looking at. In the theme editor, open the app embeds panel and find the app's toggle.

The usual ways this goes wrong:

  • You published a new theme, or a seasonal copy, and the embed was never enabled in it.
  • The embed is on, but the app's own settings have the drawer disabled or limited to certain pages.

Are two cart apps conflicting?

Two apps that both try to control the cart will interfere with each other. Each listens for the add-to-cart action and each tries to open its own drawer.

Look for more than cart drawer apps. Anything that reacts to adding a product can collide: upsell pop-ups, bundle apps, free gift apps, sticky add-to-cart bars.

To find the culprit:

  1. On the duplicate theme, switch off every app embed except the cart drawer.
  2. Test. If the drawer works, an embed was the cause.
  3. Switch the others back on one at a time, testing after each.

When you find the clash, decide which app owns the cart and remove or reconfigure the other. Fewer apps on the cart also helps speed, as explained in our article on whether a cart drawer app slows down a Shopify store.

Is leftover code from an uninstalled app in the way?

Uninstalling an app does not always remove what it added to your theme. Apps that work through an app embed disappear cleanly when removed. Older apps, and some installed by hand, edited theme files directly, and those edits stay after the app is gone.

Leftover code keeps running, and an error in it can stop later scripts, including your current drawer.

Signs to look for:

  • The problem began after you removed or replaced an app.
  • Your browser's developer console shows errors naming an app you no longer use.
  • A fresh, unmodified copy of your theme from the theme store works, and yours does not.

Removing leftover code means editing theme files, so work on a duplicate or ask a developer. To avoid the problem in future, prefer apps that install through an app embed. Marka Cart Drawer is one: no theme code is edited, and switching the embed off brings back your theme's own cart.

Do your add-to-cart forms use standard markup?

A drawer can only respond to an add-to-cart action it can detect. Themes and apps expect the standard Shopify product form. If a page uses something else, the product may be added while the drawer never hears about it.

This usually shows as a drawer that works on some pages and not others. Common places:

  • A custom landing page built with a page builder.
  • Quick-add buttons on collection pages.
  • A custom product template with a hand-built button.

Where one fails, the fix is either to rebuild that button as a standard product form or to use whatever method your drawer provides for being opened and refreshed from custom code.

Is the drawer showing stale data?

If the drawer opens but shows the wrong contents, it is displaying a saved copy of the cart and not the current one. Check these:

  • Your own browser. Test in a private window before concluding anything. Cached scripts make a fixed problem look unfixed.
  • Totals that disagree. If the items are right but the price differs from checkout, that is a discount problem, not a display one. See why the cart total does not match checkout.

A short checklist

  1. Duplicate the live theme and test in a private browser window.
  2. Check the theme's cart type setting matches the drawer you intend to use.
  3. Confirm the app embed is on in the theme you are testing.
  4. Switch off other app embeds, then re-enable them one at a time.
  5. Look in the browser console for errors from apps you no longer use.
  6. Test every kind of add-to-cart button, including quick-add and custom pages.
  7. Publish the fix only after it works on the duplicate.

Once the drawer is working, our guide to what a Shopify cart drawer should contain covers making good use of it. If the fault keeps returning because the drawer is tangled into your theme code, a drawer that runs as an app embed, such as Marka Cart Drawer, is the cleaner route.
