Cart-Only Deals on Shopify: Offers That Appear Only in the Cart

How cart-only 'steal' deals work on Shopify: what to offer, per-order limits, spend thresholds that unlock them, margin guardrails and honest presentation.

A cart-only deal, often called a steal deal, is a discounted product that a shopper can get only from inside the cart. It is not on the product page, not in a collection and not in an email. It works because the shopper has already decided to buy, so the offer only has to earn one more tap. This guide covers what to offer, how per-order limits and spend thresholds keep the deal under control, how to check the margin, and how to present it without invented urgency.

What is a cart-only deal?

It is an offer whose price exists in one place. A shopper opens the cart and sees a product at a reduced price that they could not have found by browsing. Accept it and it joins the order; ignore it and nothing changes.

That is different from an ordinary in-cart upsell, which shows a product at its normal price. The steal deal adds a reason to act now: the price is tied to this order.

Why does the cart suit this kind of offer?

Because the hard decision is behind the shopper. On a product page, a discount has to persuade someone to buy at all. In the cart, the shopper has chosen, and the question is only whether to add a little more.

Three things follow from that:

  • The offer can be small. A low-priced extra does not reopen the main decision.
  • It does not undercut your catalogue prices. Browsers and price-comparison visitors never see it.
  • It is quick to judge. Either people who see it take it, or they do not.

Offer one deal at a time. A cart crowded with offers delays checkout.

Which products make a good steal deal?

Products that need no explanation and cost little beside the cart they sit in. Good candidates share most of these traits:

  • Priced well below the cheapest item already in the cart.
  • High gross margin, so a real discount still leaves profit.
  • No size or fit decision, or a single obvious variant.
  • Useful with almost anything you sell: a care product, a refill, a travel size, an accessory.

Avoid offering a cheaper alternative to what the shopper chose. That invites a swap, not an addition. For more on choosing the product, see our guide to what to upsell in the cart.

Why set a per-order limit?

Without one, a generous deal becomes a way to buy your product in bulk at a price you never meant to offer widely. A limit of one or two per order keeps the deal what it is: a small extra on a real purchase.

State the limit next to the offer. A shopper who tries to add three and is quietly stopped at one will assume the cart is broken.

When should a spend threshold unlock the deal?

Use a threshold when the deal only makes sense on a larger order. Showing the offer locked, with the amount needed to unlock it, gives the shopper a reason to add to the cart before the deal is even available.

Two cautions:

  • Do not stack it on the same number as your free-shipping threshold unless you intend both to trigger together. Spacing rewards out gives the shopper more than one step to reach for, which is the idea behind a tiered rewards bar.
  • Keep the threshold within reach of a typical order plus one item. A deal that almost nobody unlocks is decoration.

In Marka Cart Drawer, steal deals are offers that exist only inside the cart, with per-order limits and an optional spend threshold that unlocks them. They are part of the paid plans, and the price is applied at checkout by a Shopify discount function.

How do you protect the margin?

Work out the profit on the deal item at the deal price, then ask who would have bought it anyway.

Here is an example with made-up round figures. Say a travel-size product sells for $20 and costs you $7 to buy and pack. At 40 percent off, the shopper pays $12 and you keep $5 before any extra shipping cost. If it fits in the same parcel, that $5 is profit the order would not otherwise have had.

Now the guardrails:

  • Cost floor. Never set the deal price below the item's landed cost plus the extra handling.
  • Stacking. Decide whether a discount code can apply on top. If it can, redo the sum with the code included.
  • Cannibalisation. If the deal product already sells well at full price, some takers would have bought it anyway, and for them the deal is only a discount. Prefer products that rarely sell on their own.
  • Shipping. Check the heavier parcel does not cost more to send than the deal earns.

Once the deal is live, judge it on profit per order, not on how often it is taken. Our guide to A/B testing cart offers on a low-traffic store explains how to compare two versions fairly.

How do you keep it honest?

Say only what is true. The deal is strong enough without invented pressure.

  • No countdown timer unless the offer really ends when it reaches zero.
  • No 'only 2 left' unless stock is that low.
  • The crossed-out price should be the price you actually charge for the item elsewhere on the store.
  • 'Only in the cart' should mean exactly that.

Rules on reference prices and urgency claims differ by country, so check the ones for the markets you sell in. The practical test is simple: if a customer saw how the offer was set up, would they feel misled.

A short checklist

  1. Pick one low-priced, high-margin product that goes with most orders.
  2. Set the deal price above landed cost plus handling, and check the sum again with a discount code applied.
  3. Limit it to one or two per order and say so beside the offer.
  4. Add a spend threshold only if it sits within reach of a typical order plus one item.
  5. Remove any timer or stock message that is not literally true.
  6. Place a test order and confirm the deal price at checkout matches the cart.

Cart-only deals are one of several offers covered in our guide to what belongs in a Shopify cart drawer. To run them with limits and thresholds built in, see how Marka Cart Drawer handles them.
