Your Product Feed Is Your Real Storefront
Google Shopping, marketplaces, retail media, affiliates and AI shopping agents all buy from your feed, not your website. Feed engineering is merchandising.
Somewhere along the way, the product feed — that unglamorous file of SKUs and attributes — became the primary sales surface for most commerce businesses. Google Shopping reads it. Marketplaces ingest it. Retail media targets from it. Affiliates syndicate it. Price-comparison engines rank it. And AI shopping agents now parse it with more attention than any human ever gave your homepage. Your website is where the checkout lives; the feed is where you get chosen.
Feed quality is a ranking factor everywhere
Every downstream system scores feed completeness and accuracy, and every one of them punishes gaps economically rather than loudly. Missing GTINs suppress Google Shopping impressions. Sparse attributes drop you from filtered searches — and filtered searches are where high-intent buyers live. Title structure decides which queries you match: "Slim-Fit Merino Crew-Neck Jumper, Navy, M" wins searches that "Aldo Jumper Blue" never sees.
The compounding effect is brutal: a feed at 70% attribute completeness does not get 70% of the traffic — it gets excluded from the filtered majority of it.
Treat the feed as engineered product, not export
One canonical model, many renderings. Your product truth lives once — attributes normalised, units consistent, categories mapped to a master taxonomy. Each destination (Google, Amazon, Zalando, TikTok, Criteo) gets a rendering with its own field mapping, title recipe, category translation and image rules. Fix data at the source once, propagate everywhere. This is the same architecture that powers marketplace expansion; the feed is just another channel adapter.
Titles and attributes per channel intent. Google rewards front-loaded keywords with structure; marketplaces have per-category title grammar; agents want dry precision. One title field serving all of them serves none.
AI enrichment with review gates. Filling attribute gaps from photos and supplier documents is now a solved, cheap problem — vision models extract, humans review the low-confidence tail. There is no longer an excuse for "colour: see image".
Validation before submission, monitoring after. Every destination has schema rules; catching violations pre-submit turns rejection firefighting into a dashboard. Then watch disapproval drift: feeds rot as catalogues change, and a feed that was clean in March is quietly leaking impressions by August.
The money version
Feed work is the rare channel investment with compounding, near-permanent returns: better data lifts every connected surface simultaneously, and it keeps lifting them after the consultant goes home. We have watched attribute-completion projects outperform ad-budget increases three-to-one on incremental revenue — the traffic was always there, filtered away from incomplete listings.
The storefront metaphor deserves retiring. You do not have a shop window; you have a data contract with a dozen distribution machines. Write it well.
